Albert Thomas LundeLUNDE

1953  - 2020

Albert Thomas Lunde, 66, died July 12, 2020 of natural causes. A resident of Evanston, IL, he was retired after more than  four decades as a computer programmer and systems analyst for  Northwestern University’s Evanston campus.   He was a graduate of Chicago’s Ebinger  School and Taft High School (1971). and NU (1975). His interests in science and space travel (real and science fiction) started with watching Alan Shepherd’s first launch into space and expanded after attending  J. Allen Hynek’s Astro-Science workshop in 1969-70. He started taking early computer programming classes in high school on Saturdays at IIT and later wrote programs for two projects which went to the Chicagp city science fair.

While finishing his science-engineering degree at NU, he assisted in developing programming for a professor’s  projections on future global warming in the Arctic. He was invited to join the staff at NU’s Vogelback  Computer Center. His was the era when, if your department needed a program, you wrote it, rather than buying a commercially produced  package and trying to make it fit.

A  fourth generation resident of Chicago’s Edison Park community, with additional roots in Evanston on his mother’s side, he followed family traditions in community  leadership and fighting for good causes.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester H.  Lunde and Grace Stafford Lunde. He is survived by his sister, area journalist ad historian Anne Lunde; by first cousins Peggi Erickson and Brad (Patsy) Lunde, their families Brian (Jill) Erickson and Krista Erickaon, Laura (John) Ringo and Susan (Ben) Scruggs; and many second and third cousins.

A memorial service will be planned for 2021 to be shared by his congregation at United Church iof Rogers Park (United Methodist) , where he served on the liturgy committee and assisted with sound technology, and Edison Park United Methodist Church where he grew up. M.J, Suerth Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
